Randy Maguire is a native of El Paso, Texas. He began studies in music composition in 2005 and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at El Paso and a master’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Randy writes music for dance, film, multi-media installations, and the concert stage. Much of his work deals with the concepts of memory and identity, and how these are shaped by our sense of place, particularly in the border region.
His work has been performed at the Cohen New Works Festival and the Fusebox Festival in Austin, TX. He was a collaborating artist in the CUADRO arts lab by the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center and L.A.-based Machine Project. His chamber opera, When The Horse Runs Off, was premiered in 2011 and Randy was selected to receive the Roy P. Crane Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts. In 2016, He composed and performed a live score for his community-generated film project “One Thousand Eyes”, made possible with grant funding from the El Paso MCAD and the National Endowment for the Arts. Recently, he completed the score for the short film Starving Souls by Angie Reza Tures which was presented at the Femme Frontera Film Festival.
Randy also served as the program director of The Caldo Collective, a non-profit organization where he oversaw the Transient Triangle Project, a series of interactive multimedia art installations and performances that are presented in the public space. He is currently the Orchestra and Guitar Director at Transmountain Early College High School in El Paso, TX.
